How to Structure Your Online Course: The Outline Formula
A proven framework for organizing course content so students stay engaged.
AwayBase TeamSeptember 22, 2025

Structure matters. Here's how to outline a course that flows.
Start With the Outcome
What will students be able to do after completing the course? Work backwards. Each module should move them toward that outcome.
The Module-Lesson Hierarchy
4-6 modules, 3-6 lessons each. Module = major milestone. Lesson = single concept or step. Keep lessons under 10 minutes when possible.
The Pattern
- Module 1: Foundation — Must-know basics
- Module 2-4: Core content — The meat of the course
- Module 5: Application — How to use it in the real world
- Module 6: Next steps — Resources, community, upsells
Lesson Types
Mix it up: video, text, worksheets, quizzes. Variety keeps engagement. End each module with an action item or assignment.
Testing the Outline
Before recording: Can someone follow this outline and achieve the outcome? If yes, you're ready. If no, simplify.
