Licensing Your Digital Products: Personal vs. Commercial Use

Usage rights affect pricing and customer expectations. Get them right.

Personal Use

Customer can use the product for their own projects. No resale, no client work. Typical for lower-priced items ($5-19).

Commercial Use

Customer can use for client work, their business, resale in some cases. Command 2-3x the price of personal use.

Extended Licenses

For templates and designs: unlimited print runs, broad commercial use, or white-label rights. Price accordingly — often 5-10x base price.

How to Communicate

Add a "License" or "Usage" section to every product page. Be specific. "Personal use only" or "Commercial use for up to 500 prints" prevents disputes.

The Simple Rule

When in doubt, start restrictive. You can always offer upgrade options. It's harder to scale back permissions after the fact.
