How to Record Professional Course Videos on a Budget

Good lighting and audio matter more than an expensive camera. Here's the setup.

Lighting

Ring light or softbox. Or natural light from a window — face the light, not backlit. Avoid harsh shadows.

Audio

Lavalier mic ($20-50) or a decent USB mic. Bad audio kills engagement. Good audio makes even phone video acceptable.

Recording Options

  • Screen recording: Loom, OBS, or Mac QuickTime for tutorials
  • Talking head: Phone on a tripod works
  • Slides + voiceover: PowerPoint or Keynote, record narration

Editing

Keep it simple. Cut long pauses and mistakes. You don't need fancy transitions. Captions increase completion rates — use Descript or similar.

Hosting

AwayBase supports video embedding. Host on Vimeo or Wistia for better control, or use direct uploads. Ensure videos are private and only accessible to enrolled students.
